Methodology

It consists of establishing a fixed sampling station made up of different nest boxes.

These will be placed in a suitable habitat for the species, such as a deciduous forest (mixed or pure forests of oak, beech, hazel, chestnut, ash, ash trees, etc.), or in an area where the species is already known to be present.

Protocols

The project includes two monitoring protocols. Both protocols use nest box stations that allow the collection of data associated to the presence and reproductive activity of the species over time at different points of its distribution.

If you would like to participate, choose which of the two protocols you would like to join and do not hesitate to contact us!

Basic

This protocol, designed for citizen involvement, allows data collection in a simple way and can be applied by any person or group without previous experience.

Advanced

For this type of survey, you need to have some previous experience and knowledge of how to handle the species. It involves manipulation of edible dormouse specimens to mark them and take biometric measurements for more detailed monitoring.

Good practices

This activity does not give you privileges over other citizens or biodiversity. You must always respect the basic rules of coexistence and respect private property as well as public spaces.

During the course of the activity, it is important to take care of our and other people safety. At all times it is extremely significant to respect the animals as much as possible and to guarantee the minimum disturbance to them. Therefore, it is recommended to be silent during the reviews and carry them out quickly and safely. You will take these considerations into account when you find breeding nests.

If someone asks you what you are doing, you can always take the opportunity to explain the project to them.
